From Bean to Cup: The Legendary History of Coffee
Every morning, millions of people start their day with the ritual of brewing coffee. But how did this beloved drink become so important worldwide?
According to legend, coffee has a fascinating story. In the wild landscapes of Ethiopia, a shepherd named Kaldi noticed something unusual while watching his goats: after eating certain berries, the goats became extremely energetic and couldn’t stay still. Curious, Kaldi tried the berries himself and felt the same effects. Seeking answers, he brought the berries to dervishes. At first, the berries were seen as something forbidden, but once the beans were roasted, a wonderful aroma spread. The dervishes poured hot water over the roasted beans and discovered that the drink helped them stay awake during night prayers. Over time, coffee in Ethiopia was also served with herbs and spices as part of daily life. Today, coffee ceremonies continue and are regarded as symbols of hospitality and generosity.
Another legend is linked to Yemen and differs slightly from the Ethiopian tale. It says that a Sufi dervish, during a spiritual journey, passed through Ethiopia and saw birds eating coffee berries. Observing them, he noticed how lively and energetic they were. Tired from travel, he tried the berries himself and felt his energy rise. A common belief is that coffee beans first traveled from Ethiopia to Yemen, and that Yemeni merchants then began producing coffee after bringing the beans to their homeland.
